Bring Kimbrel in for the 8th last night and that game probably doesn't go to extras.
unless the pitcher in the 9th blows it...

What's the difference in blowing it in the 8th or the 9th if you are at home?

We're still having this argument?
Maybe we can bring back Dan Kolb to throw out of the pen everyday and only use our good relievers about once a week.

It's better to blow it in the 8th b/c you get more at-bats to tie it?

Why? Is there an increased chance of scoring a 4th run in a game that is 3-3 going into the bottom of the 8th as opposed to 3-2? The same kind of strategy is employed to obtain an insurance run as a go ahead or tying run in the last couple of innings. You play small ball and try to manufacture a run. We don't suddenly have a better chance of producing a run based on what inning it is. It has more to do with who is due up if anything.
All things equal, who would you rather see on the mound in the late innings of a tight game with the heart of the order coming up, including 2 of the best hitters in all of baseball: Cory Gearrin, Luis Avilan, or Craig Kimbrel? That's really the only thing you need to ask yourself.

Agreed Robot. Managers should throw their best arm out there when it's needed. Sometimes that might be the 8th inning. Unfortunately, managers are too attached to what qualifies an appearance as a Save.

6 outs > 3 outs?

Huh? I'm sayig blowing the lead in the 8th is better than the 9th because you have more outs to work with. Seems pretty obvious to me.

I don't think its that easy. Kimbrel is use to closing the game. Who knows how bringing him int he 8th would go. Then you have the problem of who closes.
Either way you have to trust other guys beside your closer so I don't really understand the point.

I tend to see dynamite closers fail when they are forced in the 8th. Especially if it's no outs in the 8th. Of course this is just superstitious and gut feeling.

You get 27 outs if you need them every game. Whether you lose the lead in the 8th or 9th you still get those 6 outs.
The bottom line is that your best reliever should be pitching in the toughest situations. Facing Mauer, Morneau, Plouffe is much more difficult than 8,9,1.
Also, when you have runners on base (like last night) that situation becomes more high leverage than starting a clean inning. Fredi should consider using Kimbrel more in late inning jams for that reason as well.

I'm willing to bet most would argue that it's more of a mentality thing.
If Kimbrel is constantly being thrown into games with 2 men and needing to get 2 outs, and he allows a couple to score, does that affect his mentality? Does he lose confidence? Etc.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong, or I agree with it.
But that's kinda how I feel about "over use" too. From what I've read it doesn't technically exist. Or at least can't be proven. But you do have to play it by the pitcher. If the pitcher is tired, then don't trot him out there and risk injury. Everyone needs rest.

My favorite part of sweeping the Twins was that damn Hrbek jersey the Twins announcers booth pulled out in the first game "for luck".

I am still trying to figure out how Corky Miller added value to the Braves, especially if he was a poor defender

Corky Miller should have won a gold glove in center field.

Actually I totally agree with you here. Was never a Corky Miller guy. Didn't understand AT ALL what he added to the team.
But you know who did think he added value to the team? Bobby Cox. Cuz he sure as hell trotted him out on the field every fifth day with no qualms.
And when it comes to baseball, I think Bobby Cox's view >>>>>>>>> yours or mine.

Well, that team went 72-90 and Corky Miller batted .083 with a -0.5 WAR.
