If the wife doesn't pay her part, she could will the money/assets to others, get remarried and split it with the new hubby, or will it to any new children. If she throws in for 50%, you pay less and can ensure the children get it through your will, gifts, paying for their education, etc. Once they hit 18, she doesn't have to pay for anything for them and can piss it away on herself. If she's reasonable, maybe you can talk to her, make her understand she should be on the hook for 50% of it, and would be willing to throw in. The more $$$ you pay to lawyers and advisors and in interest and penalties, the less you can help the children or will to them. Maybe take the angle you're need her help for the betterment of the kids?
