Getting my first real guitar and was wondering if anyone had any tips on learning to play. I know some chords and stuff already but nothing crazy. Bought a chord book but any suggestions would be awesome

TIA

1) Stick with it
2) Practice, practice, practice
3) Don't get frustrated...it'll take a while to build finger strength.
4) Find some easy songs you like and learn them AFTER you get the basics down. Use them to supplement your basics. It is much easier and more fun to learn that way but DO NOT abandon learning how to play.

what do you mean by "learning how to play"

like what would you recommend to do to learn how to play.

I also had nerve surgery on my left hand so feel like this could be a extended rehab type thing

Learn the major and minor chords first, you can play just about anything with that. Come up with different chord progressions you like with these or find songs using them.

There's a difference between knowing how to play songs on a guitar and knowing how to play guitar. Learning songs is easy learning how to actually play is a bit harder.

You need to learn the theory behind the instrument as well as songs.

That. You can play songs all damn day long but unless you know what you're doing and why you're doing it, it won't mean a thing because you won't progress.

I didn't even touch a guitar until my instructor taught me all the scales and theory and junk like that. He was tough. But that's just the way I was taught.

For someone just starting out, this is what I would suggest. Better to learn it right the first time than getting rid of bad habits. There are things I do wrong after 13 years that I will do wrong forever now, because I taught myself.

Try here as well.

Ultimate-Guitar. They have some decent tutorials and instructional info from time to time.

The biggest hurdle for me was 'the plateau'. My problem was that I would get something half-arse down and then move onto the next thing. Then when I DID hit that plateau and get bored I didn't have anything new to learn. Keep going at certain concepts until you have a solid and firm grasp on them. Then keep mastering them. THEN move on to the next thing. Learning isn't the tough part. Staying focused and committed is.

I just love acoustic guitar and wanted to play for so long. Now that I'm done with sports and stuff really want to focus on guitar. Really just war to sit around the fire and just play some random songs and stuff

I don't care to be worldly I just want to be good
