Not that Smith is an expert on the position, but I guess they also figure they might be trying to get some Vet presence in that specific position group. Are any of Butler, Galette, Wilson, Thomas even over 25?

Sort of, I think. The only reason why he is still on the roster is because of his cap situation. I think that they keep him at OLB and use him exclusively to rush the qb to an extremely limited extent. They are just putting him there because he really doesn't fit anywhere else either.

Certainly makes sense. They like him, but not as a 34 DE in this defense. They also have him at an acceptable salary, so why not give him a shot to stand up and play OLB?

If it works, great; if not, then they did all they could to keep a well-liked and respected veteran on the roster before cutting him loose (and possibly ending his career in the process).
