When used in the right proporsions, images of sex and violence can be powerful artistic tools. They are both very powerful parts of human existence. When it is used too much (surely very subjective), a person becomes desensitized, and the images lose meaning.
An example of HBO throwing more nudity into the story was the Melisandre scene last night that you mentioned. What does that add to the show? I think that it adds overused sensationalism, and that's all. It does nothing to develop the characters or add empathy for the characters.

It balanced off not showing Sansa's tits & the imp's dick on their wedding night. After the description in the book, I'm 100% I didn't want to see the latter.
