I'm a huge TOS fan, and I didn't like the 09 movie very much.

I thought this one was great, though. It had its flaws, as has been discussed, but overall, I really enjoyed it.

The Enterprise under water (was probably a shuttle craft originally until someone decided to amp it up) and Spock's Khaaaaaaan were a bit silly and I wish weren't in the movie, but those are minor complaints.

The Trek nerd in me could nitpick other things, like Kirk talking to Scotty from outside Federation space in real-time ( ) on a handheld communicator ( ), but I can overlook that.

Overall, it was a fun movie that better captured the spirit of Star Trek than the 09 movie, and I look forward to the next one.

Just saw it.

Soooooooo much convenient new tech. This "Original Universe" is already surpassing the Next Gen in tech. Seems that whenever they need to do something they just say that it was just invented and go with it.

Consulting old Spock. Big fail.

Who was the villain in this movie? It sure the hell wasn't Kahn. Why was Spock screaming "Kahn" when Kahn didn't destroy the Enterprise? Kahn sent Kirk BACK to the Enterprise instead of killing him. It was the Admiral that killed Kirk.

And that horrible foreshadowing segment that they just crapped into the middle of a conversation. "Kahn, I hate you but I need... Bones what are you doing with that dead Tribble?" Holy shite, did anyone NOT think that the miracle blood would come in handy later on?

The first half was stupid fun. The second half was a train wreck.

Hopefully the third one will be something new, instead of City on the Edge of Forever or The Voyage Home.

This was pretty much my feelings on the movie. I thought the 2009 reboot was probably right behind TWOK, The undiscovered country, and first contact as far as best trek movies go, but this one was pretty disappointing to me.

Cumberbatch nailed it as Khan, but it was like Abrams heard all of the complaints from folks like Ace about the last movie and tried to mimic/revisit all the stuff from old movies this time, and it came off as hokey and lame. The less said about Khan's "super blood" the better. Hopefully they are more original with the plot of the next one.

The time travel bit seemed clev er at the time. Clearly, it was a terrible idea.

Exactly. If they intend to just repackage all of the plots and characters from the past shows and movies, I'm not wasting my time with it anymore.

That's the inherent flaw of reboots. Star Trek as a franchise has had many different bridge crews featured. Perhaps simply setting the films after the others with original characters would have been the better way to relaunch the series.

Ok...I hate that I am having to knight for Abrams, but this is getting ridiculous!

1) New timeline does not mean completely new people will pop up (but some will).

2) It allows him to work with "old" material in a new way (Carol Marcus is now completely new, with a backstory and a possible way to change where she, and Kirk, end up).

3) They are just starting their 5 year mission. Fertile ground and since Abrams is about to pass the torch to do SW, all you "true" Trek fans can bring someone in to do it "right."

I have seen every ST movie in the theatre, every TOS, almost every TNG and Enterprise (DS9 and Voyager were jokes). Abrams offerings are #1 (2009) and #3 (STID) for me, with TWOK in between (and a hairs difference separating #2 and #3).

I loved Into Darkness and plan on seeing it again soon, but the repackaging complaint has some merit. I appreciate what they did with Khan and the many homages, but would rather not see V'ger or Kruge in the next film.

watched it recently.

Wished they had taken the opening sequence and volcano scene, scrapped it, and instead, used it to do the backstory showing Kahn caught and frozen a few hundred yrs earlier. Then getting thawed, leaving some mystery as they then brought in a new scene, to present day Enterprise with Kirk. Other than a little bit of a lack of character development, I thought it was pretty good.

Reading through this thread and shaking my head, although I'm not surprised. If you weren't entertained by that movie, well folks, I really pity you.

I thoroughly enjoyed the take on Kahn, even the reversed roles of Spock and Kirk. I love that they are deviating from the central MOs of all the characters. Would Spock Prime have reacted the same way had Kirk died in WOK?

As a lifelong Trek fan, I absolutely love what they are doing with this series. All these people bitching about not staying true to the original canon confuse the hell out of me. We've already seen all that. And if you ask any Star Trek and possibly Scifi fan to name their favorite villain, I'm willing to bet Kahn comes up on that list a bunch of times.

Q was TNG, not Star Trek.

I know that. I wasn't limiting my Star Trek villains to just TOS. For all intents and purposes, Q was the same character as Harcourt Mudd.

The fight scenes in TOS were full of 60s cheese. I mean, that has to be the worst fight choreography in history. The gif that gets posted here of the lion fight on the beach is arguably better than that.

I think that's why Kahn was so popular. A cerebral villain.

Nice way of saying it allows them to re-style old material and endlessly feed it back to us in whatever form they see fit.

No matter how elaborate the formula, it doesn't substitute for actual creativity.
