Based on his Brooks Baseball card he only throws FB/Slider.

So 2!

Not that it matters.

I've never seen a slider break that late. Scared the hell out of the catcher. Only reason that batter didn't swing was he was looking fastball obviously.

Also, did that catcher cost him a strike there?

No. Called Strike 3 to end the game.

jesus, that is sick.

and even if he did just have his fastball as his only pitch, most people can't hit it

No, actual scouts. I read an article about it this spring when there was the big debate on whether or not he should be a starter. I'll see if I can find it.

It wouldn't surprise me. Chapman threw like ten straight 100+mph fastballs to Dietrich, and he fouled them all off. You could tell he was frustrated about it, too. He probably just said, "frick you guys, I'm throwing a slider."

great pitch. looks even better though since the catcher thought he was throwing a fastball and got crossed up.

Oh okay that got cut out. It just looked like that ump wasn't moving to call anything.

A 102+ MPH fastball that he is locating better is already a dangerous one pitch. A slider like that combined with the fastball can make him a deadly closer.

I hope they never take him out of the closer role. Some guys are just built to be a closer (see Neftali Feliz)

So has Mariano Rivera his whole career...oh wait

Pretty much. I read an article last week that said Reds pitchers have pitched in like 200 innings this year where the the game was within 2 runs or less either way. Chapman has been a part of 2 of those innings.

Do you think he can make it as a starter with 2 primary pitches?

I know he throws the change on some occasions, but I wonder how he'd do over 6 innings rather than coming in throwing smoke after seeing guys with lesser stuff.

No. He has to develop that changeup. He was working on it in the spring when he was trying to win the #5 role in the rotation.
