At a time when health and safety issues have rattled football to its core, some members of the Penn State community can't fathom why one of the country's highest-profile and most-scrutinized college sports programs would do anything that might lessen athletic health care. Yet according to a special report in this week's Sports Illustrated, changes in the university's once-exemplary medical care are raising questions about the promises to rein in the athletic department and operate transparently. A number of former players and members of the Penn State football family told SI they are dismayed that Wayne Sebastianelli has been relieved of his duties as the longtime director of athletic medicine and orthopedic surgeon-head physician for the football team. It's part of an abrupt shift in the school's healthcare program for football -- a shift that will provide less on-site coverage. Instead of having an orthopedic surgeon who attends every practice, Penn State now employs a primary care physician in State College and an orthopedic consultant who commutes about two hours each way from Hershey, Pa., at least once a week.

God forbid they ever find out how many schools James Andrews consults for.

We have a guy, but I don't know if he goes to every practice. He's not on LSU's staff or anything, just a big time ortho in BR.

At least he is in BR
True. But in the case of a guy like Andrews, if Auburn or UAB needs him on short notice (and whoever else he consults for) he's not getting in a car and driving 2 hours. They're going to chopper him in or send a jet to the Gulf Coast. Whichever is easiest.
Geography doesn't matter all that much in this case. There are enough highly trained professionals that are around, that having an ortho consult there 24/7 is superfluous.

It's not just a guy, it's a practice with several doctors that I always see on the sidelines. Bankston, Field, Winder...I know ferachi (spelling?) used to perform surgeries also.
My mom works for the group. All great doctors. Dr. Field performed my shoulder surgery.

Ah, I was thinking of Bankston.

What a great job. Get paid to go to all the games and watch from the sideline.

I can't say enough nice things about the whole group. My mom has worked for bankston directly for at least the past 10 years, and he's such a standup guy. He usually brings his employees out fishing at least once a year in the gulf, and I can't count the number of times he's given us pounds of fresh tuna or red.
When I blew my shoulder out in Canada, I decided to come back to Louisiana to have Bankston check it out, instead of going to the team doctors again in Canada. They missed the tear the first two times they checked me out. I might have been one of their best patients for a few years.
