Travis Wood is 4-2 with a 2.03 ERA, 0.900 WHIP and 36/17 K/BB ratio in 53.1 IP. He's only allowed 4 HR in his eight starts.

Carlos Villanueva (2-3, 3.02 ERA) takes on lefty Scott Francis (1-3, 6.90 ERA) tonight at Wrigley. Probably another start at 3B for Cody Ransom against the lefthander and with Valbuena still hurting. Wouldn't doubt seeing Hairston in for Thunder Nate, either.

I wouldn't expect it to last too long

.186 BAIBP
83% strand rate

Plus I bet that .68 HR/9 comes up a bit..

Still a solid pitcher though.

Really impressed with Wood. Villanueva hasn't been terrible.

He's decent, but I dont think he can do it the whole season. Cubs starting staff as a whole is pretty damn good. It's the rest of the team that needs help.

Jorge Soler has now been honored as the Florida State League’s Player of the Week.

Soler, 21, had just four games in the week at issue, but he still hit two homers, a triple, and three doubles

or just hit at opportune times. They're really not as bad as that record indicates...horrible bullpen and somehow leading the league in doubles but not scoring many runs.

also hats off to barney for having a hit yesterday...it's not common he can say that. bring up watkins.

Chicago Cubs:
1. CF: David DeJesus
2. SS: Starlin Castro
3. 1B: Anthony Rizzo
4. LF: Alfonso Soriano
5. RF: Scott Hairston
6. C: Welington Castillo
7. 3B: Cody Ransom
8. 2B: Darwin Barney
9. SP: Carlos Villanueva

Cubs 11-9 over their last 20 games.
Lead the NL in extra base hits and doubles. Third in the NL in SB
Third in the NL in quality starts.

If they could just stop making so many errors and giving up unearned runs like there's no tomorrow .500 would be very attainable.

Yes. Just need them to old on for another month or so for deals to be made.

CBS' Jon Heyman released the top 25 SPs for this years trade market:

3. Feldmen
4. Garza
5. Wood
8. Villanueva

I can see all 3 except Wood getting moved for low B, high C level prospects. A lil less value than the Maholm deal last year. We need to hope Garza lights it up when he joins the rotation next week.

Which might not be a good thing.

I think they'd still trade high on guys but i don't want to chase fools gold in trying to get to the playoffs this year (which won't happen is what i'm saying)

Like theo said, it's not necessarily better to win 78 games instead of 73 games.

No chance he gets traded the way he has been pitching. He is young. The Cubs will hold on to him.

That seems to be the concensus. He's cheap and under team control for too long. I just can't see anyone offering a prospect worth wood. he's a good #4 starter, and if teams are only offering what could be a #3 starter there isn't any sense in that. The whole bird in the hand better than two in the bush thing. Hell would could be part of the 'core' they love to talk about.

I don't want them to not make any moves in hopes of winning the WS this season or anything, but I do like seeing them win more than I like to see them lose, so until we are good I wouldn't be dissappointed to atleast watch halfway decent baseball.

I'd prefer it too, but there is some good sense to the idea of a poor record is better than a mediocre record. Especially with the top 10 draft picks being protected (since we will likley be pretty active for the few top FA's out there this winter).

supposedly they want to ink garza long term. Whether it be if he stays with the team or comes back after being traded

I think this will ultimately happen.

Samardzija
Garza
Jackson
Wood
???

That isn't looking too horrible. Sign a guy or two in the offseason and things could be looking pretty decent.

Really, obviously that all depends on his durability after finally coming back. Because they might not even make him a qualifying offer if we can't move him and he's just average.

I guess it's a plus either way if eh comes back healthy and good. trade get value, then you have to assume he'll likely resign with that team becuase with FA what it is i doubt you wouldn't throw money at him to have more than a 3 month rental, or extend him. either is plus
