I got mine through CL, but got pretty lucky. I happened to be around the corner on a job and caught the listing within 5 minutes of it being posted. By the time I got to the house an hour later someone else was already there, but he didn't have his checkbook and I did, so I won out.
It's tough to go th CL route. The good places posted on CL go literally within minutes. Best bet is to know someone on the ground here. I didn't really know too many people that well to look for me. I called a few realtors, but they weren't much help and pretty much referred me back to CL.

You can find 1 bedrooms downtown for $1000-1300, and lower in the GD or Uptown. I used to live in a house uptown (3 bedroom) and paid $600 + utilities. My 1 bedroom now is $1250 downtown.
Tracey's gets nmy vote for daytime drinking uptown.
eta: I know the one bedrooms in my building start at like $950, but they're round 550 sq ft.

Fortunately I know half the city so that's not an issue. I haven't started looking seriously, just getting a feel for a possible move.
