Let me just continue this off-topic conversation since we're on it. Has anyone used anyhing other than craigslist/padmapper for apartment searching? I looked on nola.com once but its predictably a mess and it seemed like most were cross-posted anyway. Or anyone ever use a realtor? I used one in Houston and it worked out fine, wondering if they know of any other listings here maybe.

I have used a realtor when I moved to Nola. For $800, I got a 600 sq ft apt on St. Charles ( here). It wasn't bad and was awesome during Mardi Gras.
KFizz, my advice is do to what I did after that: take some time and pick an area you want to live in and drive around looking for apartments. You'll get a feel for what the neighborhood is like and find options that aren't posted on CL or Realtor websites as they would have to rent the apt to the first person that submits the deposit. So by not posting it on the web or CL, they can pick and choose who to rent to. Using an agent made it easier, but I didn't get as much bang for the buck.

I got mine through CL, but got pretty lucky. I happened to be around the corner on a job and caught the listing within 5 minutes of it being posted. By the time I got to the house an hour later someone else was already there, but he didn't have his checkbook and I did, so I won out.
It's tough to go th CL route. The good places posted on CL go literally within minutes. Best bet is to know someone on the ground here. I didn't really know too many people that well to look for me. I called a few realtors, but they weren't much help and pretty much referred me back to CL.
