LSU was the coaches champion. USC was the media champion. And they both have trophies.

It would have a been a game for the ages, though.

The 6 BCS conferences and Notre Dame agreed that the BCS system would decide THE national champion. You can't go back after the fact and say "look we're at the top of a poll, we're the champs!"

There's no going back - after the fact.

In fact, now there's been more of a revisionist history about it not being a split - at the time it was very clear - it was a split and every media outlet talked about it as such.

A refresher course in how this works...

The BCS is just system to match up the top two teams for a made for TV "title game" - it doesn't award anything by and of itself.

Awarding agencies:

Coaches poll were contractually obligated to award the BCS champ their poll - so it's the Coaches Poll title.

AP is not contractually obligated but they are free to award it to the BCS champ or another team.

Every "BCS" Champion (which is no longer going to be in a year) has been awarded and claimed both the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll - title...(including LSU in 2007)

Except LSU in 2003...they were not awarded the AP title while every other BCS champ was - USC was awarded the AP title.

AP/Coaches titles mark the sands of time for CFB as to whose who of national title holders.

How you still hold onto - not a split - is quite illogical.

Perhaps if OU had won their CCG that year, people would be more inclined to agree with you. As it stands they got completely dominated by KSU, and had no business being in the BCS Championship (Sugar Bowl) against LSU.

Also, USC was, as Miles is wont to say, "undefeated in regulation".
