I always liked Jerry singing backup on Bobby songs.

John Frusciante has to be one of the best. He added a lot to all the RHCP records he was on. I actually think he has a great voice and love his solo stuff.

I really don't think Cantrell qualifies. He sang a LOT of lead in Alice In Chains.
its a tricky one - id say certainly no one would mistake him as the bands lead singer by any stretch either. the definition of back up singer has changed by a huge margin over the last couple decades.
Im looking forward to checking out the new documentary "20 feet from stardom" which is all about the culture and characters that were true backup singers (the type we dont often see anymore)

Tough question because usually if a backup vocalist is good then he will get at least a few songs on lead. John Fruiscante, while by no means a great vocalist, had some underrated background vocals with RHCP.
True. Take Jason for example. He sang Seek and Destroy and Creeping Death by himself as well.

He did those live sometimes. I don't think he ever did any backing vocals on a studio album.

He never did. It was full on James. It's funny though. James voice went to total shite after 2002, and Jason's only got better from there. I posted a video earlier somewhere on the Rant where they were at the filmore celebrating 30 years. He made all the old members look like total fools as far as vocals. As well as Rob Trujillo.

When did Grohl sing backup in Nirvana? I can't think of any songs he was on.

Yeah, Grohl is usually credited with "drums, backing vocals" in Nirvana
