Tough question because usually if a backup vocalist is good then he will get at least a few songs on lead.
John Fruiscante, while by no means a great vocalist, had some underrated background vocals with RHCP.

I think John could have been a really good singer had he had training. He has a very unique voice, but he struggles to control it at times.

kinda OT but..
WHo was the guy singing on the on the Roger Waters/Van Morrison version of "Comfortably Numb"
Its like some old guy standing next to him. He does a good job imo.

I really don't think Cantrell qualifies. He sang a LOT of lead in Alice In Chains.

Arnold McCuller. One of James Taylor's backup singers for the past 20 years or so. Has also worked with Bonnie Raitt and numerous others.

His bgv's were awesome. He is fantastic on "Dosed" sings a bit of lead on that one too.

Cantrell either sang lead or harmonized with Staley. I wouldn't call him a backup.

Fair enough.
I'll offer Dave Grohl in Nirvana and Them Crooked Vultures in stead. Still kinda "front man" - ish but he rocks.
That count?

When did Grohl sing backup in Nirvana? I can't think of any songs he was on.

That edit was waiting for me to hit submit for a while, but I had some work to attend to. I assure you I would have given you credit had you initiated the thought.
