They are very minor changes get over yourself. I find it funny that the mainstream media harps on obesity rates yet bitch about a fit cartoon character.
I'd argue her character was a horrible role model anyway. She was a brat.

The character was independent, had a realistic body type, and succeeded sans prince charming. Unsurprisingly, messing with that by giving her a new look is causing an uproar.

She has officially been dubbed the 11th Disney Princess so she is back in the news.

I kind of agree really. They're clearly trying to sexify her. I don't think that's a good thing.

I can see why some parents would be unhappy but it's really not that big of a deal

So, what happened? She gave the character a bath, brushed her hair and gave her a new belt? People are upset over this?

Having daughters must be hella complicated.

It's not like they even gave her cleavage. If you look closely, she still has a round face. It's just another artist's interpretation.

My daughter could care less. She finally has a prince (arial doesn't count to her) with red hair like hers that she likes. Will be buying it for her although she has somewhat migrated towards monster high now.

That is a terrible rendition of the character, IMO. Her face looks jacked up and puffy. And yeah, why make her have a 12 inch waist all the sudden? If she had that to begin with, fine, but who the hell came up with the new version? Looks far more cartoonish in proportion than the original.

Is my daughter gonna play with the drawing? No, she'll play with the toys they make, and her conception of Merida is defined by the film. While I hate the drawing of her with a 12 inch waist, I really could care less. They also had some other renditions in which she had her bow and her more simple clothes. She's still the tomboy princess that daddy's have been waiting for (though I still hope my daughter's favorite princess is Belle).
I also want Princess Vanillope to be added to the line. She's my kind of princess, and my daughter is a bit of a daredevil. She's still too young to identify with the characters, but I do want her to have positive female leads to look up to. I don't think one drawing of Merida in any way changes my daughter's conception of her.

Is it just 1 drawing? Isn't is new look going to be how she is represented from now on in toys, books, etc etc?
I don't have any kids so it doesn't matter to me, but it seems pretty clear Disney changed the character to fit the traditional cookie cutter Disney princess style.

Right now my daughter's favorite toy is her Disney Princess castle made by Little People. Each princess is short and squat (as all Little People are, to fit in the round holes). I honestly don't think it's a big deal. In this official Disney product, even Snow White is a fat arse.
