Reyes out till after All-Star break
Johnson out till June
Dickey 5.06 ERA
Buehrle 7.06 ERA
Melky hitting .267 with .308 OBP
Bonifacio hitting .165 with .202 OBP

Blue Jays were favorite of many and they are struggling big time. Angels are in same boat after spending big in offseason

Do the Dodgers count? I know they added a ton late last season, but still. Struggling.

Dodgers are in the better spot, they are 6 out of 1st in the West. Blue Jays 8.5 and Angels 9 currently, the Dodgers also have best record of the 3 (13-20) but yeah they struggling. Kemp hasn't been Kemp, Hanley is hurt, Greinke got hurt, Gonzales just doesn't have the power since his surgery a few years ago.

I was way off on the Jays. I really thought they'd be a good team (not dominant but easy winners in the East).

They suck.

Outside of Yankees in 09 has any offseason "winner" done anything?

Seems like most of the teams that have taken the big-spending approach have struggled recently, or at least gotten off to a reeeeallly slow start. The Marlins last year, Angels last year, Angels this year, Dodgers, Blue Jays....Sometimes it all clicks and other times it just doesn't

Simply put, you can't buy a championship in baseball. Hell, the Yanks tried to do it basically five years ago and even as good of teams as they had the couple of years after that they only won 1 WS. They were much more successful building within.

04 didn't only Schilling come to Boston from Arizona?

I honestly didn't expect much. They traded for the core of a team that won 70 games last year.

That Marllins- Blue Jays trade isn't looking so bad for the Marlins.

Josh Johnson & Mark Buehrle have one win combined. Reyes has one HR, Bonifacio is batting .165 with 4 Rbis. Buck is the only one involved in the trade that is having a decent season, & he's with the Mets.

Every pitcher Jays received has struggled. Reyes was at least on fire prior to his injury

This is making Rangers GM JD look like a frickin genius.

He let a 40+ home run hitter go, replaced him with a well-past-his-prime Fat Elvis/Big Puma and STILL improved OBP at the #3 batting slot. (Plus Ian Kinsler no longer has to perform babysitting duties for said former player, which has helped both his performance and clubhouse morale.)

Lots of discussions about this, but this was the thread I found easiest.

Dodgers have turned it on, obviously. They are in 1st, but only 4 games over .500.

Jays are still bad.

Angels are 5 games under .500.

Hamilton: .223/.279/.409

Interestingly, two teams who did next to nothing in the offseason are thriving:

Rangers are 11 games over .500.

Orioles are 14(!) over .500, but in 3rd place.

Sneaky active team on the list that's playing well: Cleveland.

Acquired Bourn, Reynolds and Swish. Dealt for Bauer, who hasn't done much.

ETA: Hired Francona

You just never know how teams gel no matter what kind of talent you can accumulate. I remember the first year the Tigers acquired Miggy their lineup was looking fierce... and they didn't do jack squat.

I think the Marlins were one of the few teams that I can remember off the top of my head that actually bought a championship.

They did a profile on all the teams that spent 100+ million in offseason (even resigning own players) and I believe Yankees in 09 are only WS winning team
