Gus is great because of the way he plays off other characters, particularly Shawn. He would be terrible without Shawn. In fact, when he was given another character to play off of (i.e. his girlfriend's son), he bombed terribly.
SIDE NOTE:
So glad they got rid of the son and girlfriend, but kinda wish they'd wrap that up.

Sarcastically refer to the fact that she simply disappeared. I can see Shawn saying something like, "Whatever happened to your Indian Princess and her son, Tonto?" And Gus responding, "I don't know what you're talking about. And she was dot Indian, not feather, so Tonto doesn't even make any sense."
I think I prefer the latter.
