Nintendo's Big Problem

Pretty much sums up what I think of them.
Pretty much sums up what I think of them.

For decades now, it has been this type of thinking that has plagued Nintendo: The company is cognizant of the latest trends and shifts in gaming, but it chooses to disregard them in the name of simplicity, or family-friendly gaming. Instead, Nintendo frequently opts to develop its own warped, counterintuitive take on the latest trends.

Well, the Wii pretty much kicked serious arse in sales. This new system was poorly marketed though. Most people just think its pretty much a controller add on to the Wii.
Their current problem is a lack of games. WiiU doesn't have many good titles. Compound that with their terrible marketing of the WiiU and you have a bad situation.

All of that is correct. Do you feel like they know what works in Japan but have lost touch with western markets?

There was an article on Kotaku about how pretty much all of the AAA shooters will be skipping the Wii U - Nintendo needs to shore up third party support.

The main focus was on the controller that they designed for it and they really didn't get into the advancements of the system itself. At least that is how I saw it.
No one wants to buy a system just for the controller. The Wii offered something new and original with the motion controllers, but that was the premise behind the entire system itself. Based on their marketing campaign of the WiiU, I feel that most people consider it a $350-400 price tag for a controller.
The higher price tag of the Wii U compared to the Wii also hurts their sales. $250 was much easier to manage.

I've always felt that most of their games don't really appeal to Western countries aside from the classics like mario or zelda. Everything seems do be done up like anime or very cartoon like.

I'm really pissed about Bayonetta 2 though. I loved Bayonetta. The fight mechanics were very well done and the attacks involving her hair was different, yet cool. Would've really liked to see the 2nd one on the other systems.

No one in the states wants to buy Tentacle Rape 3: Ninja Anime Schoolgirl vs. Rapetopuss.

The sad part is that I would buy a game named that just for shits and giggles. Other than that, they only have Zelda for me.

Who knows? There have been terrible games that have won GOTY before.

Even Mario has lost it's appeal to me. The last time I really played it was on N64.

You know, now that I think about it, that is the last Mario game I've played as well.
I've played Super Mario 3 more than any other Mario game though. That thing is the bee's knees.
With the Wii, Nintendo drew in the market with something original and fresh. All the people claiming that the lack of graphics or complexity in their games was going to hurt their sales got shutdown by, well, their sales.
It really is becoming apparent that those people might be right though. The "fresh" factor of the Wii has definitely chilled, and with PS and Xbox adding their own motion control systems, they don't have the market cornered anymore.

I have fond memories of that one as well. I will always remember that I learned where that first whistle was from the movie The Wizard.

In college, when I had nothing to do, I would get baked and play all the way through without using whistles.

I wish Nintendo would have some breakthrough RPG. I remember when Super Mario RPG came on, it blew me away.(Mainly because Bowser teams up with you
). The Paper Marios is still coming out, but I really didn't care for the ones after the Gamecube version.

Nintendo is losing the kid factor in sells.. Now all the kids wants to play with there friend are most are on PS3 or Xbox live.. Nintendo sucks at online play with games if you ask me.

I feel like Nintendo just gives zero fricks about what main stream gaming is doing. They are just going to do their own thing and miraculously make it successful.
It worked for the DS and the Wii. Who would have thought a handheld with 2 screens and an underpowered console with waggle would become 2 of the best selling consoles ever?

The Wii had a mini RPG rebirth at the end of it's existence.

Nintendo has said all along that their goal is not to dominate the market, their goal is to be profitable, and they have always been profitable.
Here in the US there is just this mentality that if you aren't #1 you are a failure.

Fair enough, but it's frustrating that people like me, who used to eat up anything nintendo, haven't given a crap about the system since the GC. Most people don't even care for that system, even though I still play it from time to time.
It's just not possible to justify paying for a new console for just a few of my favorite titles, especially if the other games I want to play won't be developed for it. I admire Nintendo's mentality to a point, but you can only be hipster for so long until you've pigeonholed your target market in to hardcore Mario fans or those Pikmin freaks.

Nintendo doesn't cater to the average gamer.
The average gamer now is in their early to mid 30's.
Nintendo primarily markets to kids and families.
Nintendo also just doesn't have the deep pockets to spend on R&D and then take huge losses on the hardware up front.
So... they are perfectly happy with their niche.
