Avengers 2 might not come close to Avengers.
The Avengers had a whole lot of lightning in a bottle type stuff going for it. Marvel took the risk and had a very patient long term setup for the movie and scored big by having their first franchise in the tent score big with a great actor.
People loved the movie and the payoff but will they be as interested in the sequel, especially if RDJ isn't in it?
TL; DR: Pay the man!

Not as much, but who knows to what degree. They know what they've got with him in it. Whedon's directing, it's gonna be good.
