For what it's worth, Luke's view of the force in the EU is very different from the Republics view.
I know EU no longer matters, but they did spend a lot of time on it.

Well, that has alot to do with molding a person. They like to take them in before they develop any attachments, and it wouldn't be bad idea for a Sith Lord to make sure his apprentice didn't want to murder him.
