I guess some of what made The Exorcist so great/scary-
1 the demon isn't given a plot or motive, or reduced to some ghost of a former serial killer, or something like that. No scheme to defeat, etc. And there is no made-up way you can beat it.
2 those damn "look right into the camera lens" images. that's where the nightmares come from; you get a flashback and that fricking thing is looking right into your eyes.
A lot of devil movies, even thoughtful ones, seem to give you some way you can win (just like lots of alien invaders movies give you some hope to defeat them). The Exorcist leaves you with the thought "please just don't notice me", because if it did, that's your arse.
