This argument is often used by team owners pushing for public funds for their teams.

The reality is although it is a hotel tax being paid primarily by tourists that money generated from the tax nonetheless consists of tax dollars. And those tax dollars that could be put to use on other projects (parks, transit, schools, police, fire, etc) are instead being spent on a rich owner's team.
