AAU coach: I took money intended to steer McLemore

quote:

ST. LOUIS — Ben McLemore's former AAU coach says he received thousands of dollars in cash, lodging, meals and trips from a middle man who courted the Kansas player on behalf of sports agents and financial advisers during the 2012-13 college basketball season.

Darius Cobb, a St. Louis-based AAU coach, told USA TODAY Sports that he accepted two cash payments of $5,000 during the regular season from Rodney Blackstock, the founder and CEO of Hooplife Academy, a sports mentoring organization based in Greensboro, N.C.

Could any backlash come to Kansas because of this?

Why would Kansas be involved in Mclemore being swayed to leave school?

I doubt it, Auburn was accused of paying players to stay in school & nothing came of it.

Well this would seem to have more credible sources than the AU story.

man, the AAU system is teeming with this kind of stuff and worse. lots, if not the majority, of AAU coaches and "handlers" are on the take. this system is rotten to the core and has been for DECADES. these guys are de facto agents for the kid who is ignorant of the ways of the world and just wants out of poverty or semipoverty. i would like to see the nba have a minor league system just like mlb but i really don't care that much. my budget for the nba is zero, has always been zero and always will be zero. i follow LSU basketball because it's LSU and i love anything abut LSU including the debate and chess teams.

This reminds me about about don king and how he would convince all the young poor boxers to sign with him.

He would walk in a with a trash bag full of cash and just dump it on the table. Tons of cash but it would all be like 1's and 5s so it was really like $10k.

These kids are so uneducated and anxious for that first pay day they don't do the math.

I think you're right, but you never know

quote:

The payments that Cobb said he received from Blackstock – and the trips to Los Angeles that Cobb says he and Boyd accepted – potentially could have jeopardized McLemore's amateur status because of NCAA rules that prohibit college players' family members, friends and coaches from accepting money or gifts from sports agents or those working on their behalf. The NCAA has historically handled similar situations on a case-by-case basis.

The first thing I thought about too.

As far as whether it effects Kansas it's all going to depend on who received money and at what point. If the right people did, it makes him ineligible and that means Kansas was playing with an ineligible player. And everyone knows what's happened in the past to some schools/coaches that have one of those on the roster.

Can the UK fans spare us from any kind of BS defense of Calipari, please? College basketball is dirty, and Cal is the dirtiest of them all. It is what it is. And no one cares as long as their team wins and doesn't get caught, in that order.
