So you're expecting one or both of them to play so well that they get a better than MLE offer from someone?

if we're already over the cap, we can go over using the arenas rule and possibly split it. they won't have bird's rights though. that assumes we make a play for that max-ish guy

if we're under the cap and we haven't signed that max-ish guy, then we're in a pickle. the arenas rule won't come into play because we'll have to use our cap room to sign them both. that would hurt our ability in FA

I'd imagine that if a max guy is willing to come here, we could easily find a team with cap space to take on Lopez for, say, a future 2nd without sending $ back.

Also, renouncing him probably means you blow your load this year in a weak free agent crop.

if we sign him to longer than a 1-year deal, that means we lose options in the FA market next year

will he sign a 1 year deal?

well if hoopshype is right, we have team options the next 2 years anyway and could just renounce him

he could help facilitate a S/T though

My bad. I was confused because you mentioned the Arenas Rule which is to protect 2nd year RFAs from offer sheets and I couldn't imagine a poison pill contract going to Roberts or Miller. If over the cap Early Bird Rights are the exception which let the Pelicans give an MLE size deal.

Dell seems to be quite capable at manipulating the cap. I'm still not entirely sure how the turning Peja into a $9 million trade exception all went down, but the order of the transactions was important. I don't think Demps would let cap holds expire and lose guys he wanted to keep for pointless cap space unless it was part of a move to sign a big money guy.

Jason Smith and Robin Lopez who are arguably better players than Aminu both signed deals with team options. If Aminu's back I'd look for him to come back on a team friendly deal like that.

There is an important difference between having to renounce someone and maybe needing to in simportant if we don't renounce these other players. Or we coyld sign and trade to a team over the cap who wants to use the MLE to others, etc.

Nonsimultaneous trades create those exceptions, ande different teams can view trades differently. This is very important.

if you are over the cap and trade a player to a team under the cap, that salary (or if multiple players are involved, the difference in salary) becomes a trade exception.

i believe we actually had to do 2 deals in that one

I meant the specific order of trades to maximize the size of the exception, point being Demps has shown he can manage cap space even when his owner tells him to cut payroll to avoid bankruptcy.

False.

It has nothing to do with being over the cap or not in itself. It has to do with a nonsimultaneous trade.

this means you can have it be unbalanced in terms of salary, but you get the exception if you sent out salary. Then, you can use that to absorb a player in trade later. So, ignoring the intervening time, it balances according to a modified set of rules.
