But that's not the criterion. It is who was more valuable to their specific team. What LeBron or Durant would do IF they played for the Knicks is irrelevant. They aren't voting for "best player".

ETA: Not to put too fine of a point on it, if Hornets/Pels had been comprised of four players other than Gordon who were the equivalent of, say, Xavier Henry, and Gordon somehow led them to the second round, you could make a credible argument (based upon your criterion) that he was "most valuable" to his team.

False. The criterion is who was most valuable in the NBA.

You're arguing that the MVP is a team stat, and that a player should be rewarded for playing with an otherwise bad team and penalized for playing with an otherwise good team.
