You're a lawyer, I'll humor you with a clear yes/no question:
If Lebron took Carmelo's place, would the Knicks still make the playoffs?

Your logic, in the most literal sense, fails. There may be several players in the league that could replace Melo and lead them to the playoffs. That truism establishes nothing, really. There are players who could replace LeBron in the Heat lineup and they would still make the playoffs.
And, besides, the voting is based upon the actual rosters this season.
