that's the one thing im iffy on....where's an mp bar and shite? i can just summon as many times as i want?

Yeah they do away with mp. Your summons have hp and if that hits zero you can't use it until you revive them with special pet phoenix downs. Tutorials in the SeeD classrooms should help explain it all.
ETA - Game gets super easy when you can junction status magics to your attacks. Junction 100 sleeps to your weapon and never worry about getting attacked by most enemies.
