I am really falling in love with Indie Games

Looking through Greenlight on Steam and there are so many games made by small indies that look awesome. I voted on a lot of them today and hope they make it onto Steam.
Some of the best games this year were made by Indies. The Walking Dead by Telltale Games, Chivalry by Torn Banner, Arma by Bohemia, etc.
Indie is the future of gaming IMO. Triple AAA titles will still be around obviously but I get way more value out of indie games these days.

There will be a spot for them for sure. I am just discovering how cool they can be. I played the Braid demo and that game was really cool. I also want to check out evoland and fez.

I agree that indie games are an incredible value
would you mind giving me a good list of great indie games to check out?
I'll have some time to play this summer and could use some recommendations to look into

Yea Fez looks really fun.
I have been playing Cities XL 2012 and it's more Sim City these days than Sim City is. It's from an indie dev.

The only issue I have with them is with money. Those companies could put out substandard product simply because of lack of funding. Also, we don't hear much about them because of lack of marketing. And I wonder if they want to be a big developer and this is the "road to riches", or if they are happy being a small developer.

What's your taste?

A lot of them seek out Kickstarter instead of doing this.

That's one example of many of them getting funding to make a game better. I am excited to play that game FWIW.

Not true in the social networking world we live in now days. Youtube, Twitter, and even sites like IGN give them plenty of attention. Also, I can just browse Greenlight on Steam to find them but if one is truly worthy of the hype you will hear about it.
The Walking Dead for example won tons of awards last year.

I mean they have to make money. Some are truly happy and some want more obviously. I am not going to fault them for growing a company because that would be against my capitalistic nature but I will stop supporting them if they put out substandard products to do so.

Telltale Games
Does Telltale really count as a indie developer? While not owned by a publisher, they're regularly contracted out by major publishers.

I don't really have a taste, or don't know yet.
I've literally only played like 1 indie game on my friends computer and i don't even remember what it was, but it was enjoyable.
if I have a list to look into, I can probably give a better idea of which games I think would suit me

They still fall under the definition of indie. They have self published plenty of games and even their most popular game to date was self published. Their last 9 games have all been self published.
Ubisoft was the last Publisher to put out one of their games in 2010.

Played it last night but that's a mod of Half Life 2. I wish they would make an indie game based on it.

I see. I was looking at their list of games and went through a few but didn't keep looking past a few years. Assumed all of the console games were published by somebody else.

Only the ones that don't go on Xbox Arcade or on the PSN store.
Still doesn't make them under the active control of a large publisher.

True, but I'm not calling developers that mostly journeyman indie devs. I guess it's a mental thing where I rarely consider large companies with big hits indie devs.

They prob like getting to make the game they want without demands coming from above about what to do.

I have no problem with them cashing in when they can by doing contract work for a large publisher. That usually allows them the funds they need to make another game without outside influence.
I am glad Telltale has enough money to contract out The Walking Dead name. It did the series justice where as you have Activisions take which I wouldn't use to wipe my arse with.

You may have misunderstood me. This isn't a slam on them making money at all. I fricking love making money. Lots of it
