I'm just trying to understand why any seller of anything would consider past values to be wholly irrelevant today.

Because if I need to sell today I can't say "well frick, let me sell for the price it was a month ago. Because it was higher then". You sell for todays rate.

I think a buyer would be a lot more concerned with past prices because he/she is doing the valuation.
