Brees' possible gameday passing options:

Colston (TD-catcher, chain-mover)
Graham (playmaker, TD-catcher, chain-mover, field stretcher)
Sproles (playmaker, TD-catcher, chain-mover)
Moore (TD-catcher, chain-mover)
Pierre (chain-mover)
Watson (chain-mover, TD-catcher )
Morgan (field stretcher, TD Catcher)
Stills (chain-mover, field stretcher)
Cadet (chain-mover)
Ingram
Collins
Roby
Givens

we need less chain movers and more touchdown scorers.

That could turn out to be Stills (since we couldn't get Austin! lol).

In college, he was a precise route-runner (aka chain-mover). Not much run after the catch.

But he would also do these really quick double-moves or straight-up burn routes (aka field-stretcher) and would always be open for the TD (whether or not Landry would underthrow him was the only complication)

Also made a lot of back-shoulder TD's. So "TD Catcher" could be added one-day to his projection.

My only deal is, he didn't face much, if any, press-man jams. That ultimately could determine his progression.

@ 28 seconds, Xavier Rhodes tries to jam him and gets demolished.

And if anyone is curious about Colston, he's missed 10 games in 7 years and 5 of those came in 1 year. So that's 5 games in the other 6 years.

ya, i was accidentally looking at the games started number instead of games played...he has missed a lot of starts. Is that just a technicality? How we lineup on the first series?

Still, he does seem to be dealing with injuries frequently.

I can't see Payton going into camp with Morgan, Toon, and Stills as his 3-5 WRs.

There are still some vet WRs out there. Bring one in on a short term, incentive laden deal.

Braylon Edwards
Austin Collie (pending health)
Early Doucet
Randy Moss
Laurent Robinson
Brandon Lloyd

Why not? The only person we are missing from last year is Henderson. Morgan pretty much proved he can fill that role. Stills will be a solid #2/3 guy IMO.

That gives us Colston/Graham/Moore/Sproles as our primary targets and Morgan/Roby/Stills/Toon/Watson as back up.

We could've used help last year too. If Colston or Moore go down you're relying on one of those guys to step up and play a crucial role. Morgan proved he could run real fast in a straight line and catch 10 balls in 14 games. Toon and Stills are question marks as they haven't done anything on the big stage.

Yes. And another good WR gives us another threat as well as opens up the field for those other guys to flourish. Meachem and Henderson played bigger roles than people give them credit for.

that depth chart looks pedestrian. Amazing what Brees can do with this group

well to be honest we aren't getting "amazing" production from the wide receivers, more so with TE's and RB's as well.

They are professionals. That's what they are paid to do. That's what Morgan did when Henderson went out last year.

Sounds like he's a Meachem clone.

Agreed, but at some point you have to give them a chance the same way you did with Moore and Colston.

How many WR can we carry? If you sign someone else, one of those WRs aren't going to make the roster. No way we have Colston, Moore, Morgan, Stills, Toon, Graham, Watson AND another WR.

I can't disagree, but it's time for the next man in line to step up and fill in.

We dont know the specifics yet, but I dont see why we cant carry 6 WRs, not counting Roby. No telling if they keep the extra safeties, TEs, FBs etc. Also, knowing Payton, a guy like Stills will be inactive most games.

Colston
Moore
(Free Agent WR2 or WR3 depending on who you add)
Morgan
Toon

Morgan and Toon would still play vital roles with the chance to grow into bigger roles if they prove themselves. Brees will obviously mask some of their shortcomings.

Aint that the truth.
BUT, I think Stills become's a player right away (barring injury). He knows what it take to be a pro (his father and uncle played in the NFL) and he fills a need.

I just don't think any FAs we could afford will come in and make it a signifigantly better roster compared to what we would have to pay them. Not to mention that bringing in another FA WR could possibly hurt the development of Morgan, Toon and Stills because of less practice reps and playing time.

In 3-WR sets, I see the gameday depth chart like this:

WR1: Colston, Givens, Toon, Fayson, Hakim

Slot: Moore, Stills, Tanner

WR2: Morgan, Stills, Roby, Parker (waived)

BOLD: active on gameday
italics: inactive on gameday
Underlined: PS or waived

I have never seen an NFL team carry 7 receivers on their 53 man roster before.

We sure can't afford to do that with all the bodies on defense we will need.

I've appreciated Roby but have thought keeping a guy solely as a gunner and backup returner is a luxury. We need a young guy to step up and not only be a gunner but be a legitimate backup. One of the young WRs would fit the bill. Roby is at $900K so there's several hundred thousand to save towards the cap as well.

Even though we did some solid work in the UDFA market, I would have liked to have signed up Da'rick Rogers as an UDFA. I think he would have impressed in our offense and training camp.
