Ran across this article and wanted the opinion of the OB.

quote:

The Lake Pontchartrain crab fishery saw a down year in 2012, and it's setting up to be even worse this year, according to John Lopez, coastal sustainability program director of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation

quote:

There are a number of culprits that could be to blame, but one of the prime suspects, Lopez said, is 2010's BP oil spill

quote:

Another possible cause of the decline, Lopez said, could be lingering effects from Hurricane Isaac.

In my opinion, this is a pile of BS. Why don't they pin anything on commercial overfishing of them? We went to Delacroix 2 weekends ago and there was a small bay we went in and it must have had at least 200 traps.
I'm 33 and I can remember it being relatively easy to catch a hamper of crabs in the lake and other places growing up with a handul of nets. Yea, BP and storms may have some effect on the population, I think they are totally missing the boat by not placing any blame on the commercials.

Why not place a commercial quota on them like they do other species?

It's an honest living. The crabbers are hurting too.

It's not BP. It's AGP!

people are catching the hell out of them in manchac right now with nets...we boiled around 45 dozen last night for a get together, they caught them yesterday
