We don't do dogs any favors by treating them like humans in every respect. Dogs are their own species. However, they have emotions (don't even attempt to argue otherwise . . . science will be against you) and they are great companions who deserve our respect. As someone else on TD pointed out, after the harnessing of fire, the domestication of the wolf may be the next great human achievement. It's sad when dogs die because they are truly innocent creatures.
