I've seen it a few times.... the LSU catcher has the runner dead to rights going to second base on a sacrifice bunt and he goes to first instead.
Does PM threaten these guy with the bench if they
go for the lead runner? One day its gonna bite us on the a$$.

Take the sure out. It's the good move as good as our pitching and defense has been.

You didn't see it last night. He would have been safe.

With this pitching staff and defense, take the easy out and go from there.

Take the sure out and prevent a big inning. I like that strategy.

Get the sure out, unless you are certain of getting the lead runner. Play smart baseball and continue to listen to PM

They could have gotten him out on the tapper in front of Ross, but it was still the best move, to go to first..It didn't hurt...

Mainieri's philosophy has been to get the runner at 1st base since he's been here. Guess you haven't paid attention. He's even said it.

You take the out at first for many reasons.

1) No time is wasted trying to decide if the throw should go to another bag.
2) The throw to first is practiced and automatic. Pick ball up, throw to first.
3) Everyone on the field knows where the ball is going and their role
4) First base remains open.

2 virtually guarantees an out because, barring an error, the batter is not going to reach first before the throw.

1 and 2 together prevent fielding errors at first because no time is wasted on checking if the lead runner can be gotten, deciding he can't, then rushing the throw to first, increasing the likelihood of an error.

3 makes sure that everyone is on the same page. If the infield is unsure of where the catcher is going, and things start happening fast, the chance of errors goes up.

4 is nice because it leaves an open bag if you need to intentionally walk someone.

It happened last night and the runner never scored. Always get the sure out.

It would have been close. Watching the replay I think Ross did the right thing. Unlike LSU SC got a good jump. When Laird bunts our runners are hesitant...rightfully so.

ETA: Ibarra needs to work with Laird on bunting.

Ross is the best pure catcher in the SEC (hitting aside); I think PM gives him the freedom to attempt certain plays if he believes he can make them, and that includes gunning down the lead runner on a sac bunt if the situation calls for it. Ross knows the sure thing is the best play percentage wise, so that's the play he makes. PM doesn't keep his best veteran players on a leash.

bullshite! If you're a top 5 Division I baseball team and can't put multiple bunt defenses on, shame on you. I understand the philosophical position, but baseball is situational. If you think that LSU will ALWAYS go for the sure out at first, you're delusional. If you commenters are correct, CPM is an idiot.

I'm sure they can, but unless there is a big difference in pitching, college games are decided on mistakes. Get the sure out; avoid the big inning; it's the smart move 95% of the time.

Not everyone lives in Baton Rouge. Also, I
dropped the Times Picayune when they went 3 a week
and the Advocate delivers yesterdays news.
That being said, in a tie game in the final innings with 1 or no outs,
like Alabama, if you can get the lead runner...get him.
The runner on first doesn't matter. Its called situational baseball.

Like it or not, Coach instructs the players to always go to first.

Look guys, I know his philosophy, it's obvious.I am questioning it. Tell me you've never seen a catcher go to second base on a bad bunt.
Last night on the dribbler, we had the runner dead to rights at second. Also, happened once in the Alabama game.
The catchers are obviously programed to go to first no matter what the situation and thats not smart baseball in an extra inning game. Certainly not smart on a bad sacrifice bunt with no outs.

Guess we'll agree to disagree...until we lose a close one we could have won.
