#LSU Coach Les Miles wonders about cross division opponents in the #SEC and suggests a random computer draw for schedules.

I don't think it would be random enough.* I am reminded that Apple had to tweek their completely random shuffle setting on iPods because people were complaining that it wasn't random enough. Random could dictate that we get:

Georgia Florida
Georgia South Carolina
Georgia Florida
Georgia South Carolina

for the next 100 years. What says the rant?

ETA: I'm pretty sure I misunderstood what Les is advocating.

quote:

“A key piece for any conference is to allow equal access for any champion,” said Miles, who suggested that a computer should be utilized to select a rotation of two cross-divisional opponents for each team in the league.

Looks like it would just randomly set up the rotation and that would be it, not pick random opponents each year.

Apples Random really isn't random enough. I hear most of the same songs every time I do that

He's probably tired of having the toughest schedule in the country every year

They need to just decide division winners based on record against division opponents.

Not a terrible idea, but then what is the point of playing cross division games?

For this to work properly, we would need to move the SEC Offices out of Bama.

Then what's the point of even having two divisions or playing anyone in the other division? Why not just separate the two and make two 7-team conferences?

Why not take a page from some of the professional leagues.

The team that finishes 1st in the West gets the 1st and 7th place team from the East the next year.
2nd gets 2nd and 6th
3rd gets 3rd and 5th
4th gets 4th and 3rd
5th gets 5rd and 4th
6th gets 2nd and 6th
7th gets 1st and 7th

Alabama would get Georgia (key early season) and Kentucky
LSU would get Florida and Tennessee.
A&M would get South Carolina and Missouri
MSU would get South Carolina and Vandy
Ole Miss would get Vandy and Missouri
Arkansas would get Florida and Tennessee
Auburn would get Kentucky and Georgia

Adds a little bit of meaning to the late season Egg Bowl/UK-UT types.

That makes a little too much sense for the folks in Birmingham, I'd imagine.

Or have the mainframe located somewhere neutral!

Regardless, I don't like this idea. Bama will just get whoever the bad teams are going to be...

The point of having 2 divisions seems obvious to me - to get 2 teams for a championship game.

One good reason to play cross-division games would be to keep the TV money in house. Even if the 2 divisions didn't play, the 14 team conference is way more valuable than the sum of 2 7 team conferences.

Takes a little something from the NFL, I kind of like this. Makes more sense than leaving it up to ping pong balls....which is essentially what they'd be doing

Oh, so you're speaking from a financial standpoint. So basically you think it would be a good idea to have two exhibition games against SEC teams every year?

Was LSU/Oregon an exhibition game? LSU/TCU? LSU/VA Tech? etc. I think there would be a little bit of interest and excitement for LSU/Florida, LSU/Georgia, LSU/Tennessee, LSU/South Carolina, etc. even if it didn't impact the conference standings.

i think the best is what has been suggested plenty of times. Drop permanent opponents and make a set rotation of cross division opponents. Bama and Auburn have a problem with dropping cross division permanents? They can move to the East and Mizzou and Kentucky or Vandy can move to the West.

Why not use a simple rotation. We play everyone in a row, then start over again. The only real fair way to do it. It might suck at the start, but eventually it evens out.

Just expand to 16 teams, then create four divisions.

- Play every team in division (3 games)
- Play one rotating division every year (4 games)
- Play one opponent from another one of the divisions based upon previous seasons SEC standings (1 game)
