In a way, Trapper was just a watered down version of Hawkeye. So in that light, I didn't mind getting BJ as a bit of a different character - married, more stable guy. But yeah, BJ was kind of a vanilla character

BJ was incredibly boring, so they tried to enliven him by adding all that stupid practical joke stuff which made him annoying as well as dull. Mike Farrell being a bland screen presence didn't help.

The writers never really took advantage of the differences between Hawkeye and Trapper. What made Alda and Rogers work so well together were their different cadences -- Alda the fast-talking Grouchoesque New Yorker (even though his character is supposed to be from Maine), Rogers with his laidback Alabama drawl.

BJ was probably my least favorite character. Frank was my favorite but I didn't mind Winchester. Potter was ok. The early cast is the best. Rader was good when he was shady and didn't act ghey.
