Overton Square in Midtown has gotten better. Bar called Local is pretty good, and a place opened up across the street I haven't been to but looks nice. There's also just about any kind of food you would want within walking distance. Molly's La Casita (half & half margarita is good), Blue Monkey bar, Memphis Pizza Cafe, Bosco's (they make their own beer), new place called Ochiwalla's and there's a Yolo.

I'm hearing good things about Bar Louie in Overton Square. The biggest drawback is that you have to drive there and drive home, whereas if you're staying downtown you can easily walk to any of the places listed.
Cooper Young is walkable IN Cooper Young, but it's another place you need to drive to. If you walk too far in the wrong direction you'll be in a bad spot.
ETA: CadesCove where are you now?
