Lville athletic department is one of the best in the country, despite recent on-field success
que? doesn't the recent on field success demonstrate this? Also that is not really relevant since they have no chance to join the SEC (and lets not act like that wouldn't be their first choice) would not be the B1G's first choice if the B1G considered them at all. so that basically leaves them with 2 options, ACC or BigXII.

ND could have gone to Big12, ACC, or kept the Big East alive.
The Big 12 is possible, but i doubt it would have accept the same terms the ACC did. As for keeping the Big East alive, I guess they could have remained with the "Catholic Seven" that don't play D1 FB but unlike the ACC ND gets a lot from the deal.

ACC plan was to increase their viability as a football conference, which in turn will increase their tv revenus, this is why ND was added to the schedule. That is not desperation, that is smart strategic planning.
I'm sure that's what the ACC people told themselves. ND was already playing 3-4 ACC teams a year recently anyway (counting Pitt). Adding 2-3 ND games will not help their TV Revenue. ND is not sharing the NBC money for ACC games or BCS/Playoff revenue and they can get preference for ACC bowl ties over ACC teams with the same or 1 game better records. With out expanding ACC TV revenue will not increase, even if FSU and or Miami become relevant powers again.
