frick...hadn't seen it in 5-6 years and watched it the other night on Netflix. Forgot how great it was. The choreography, story, characters, and cinematography are all just wonderful. Almost a perfect movie IMO, hindered only by the overly long flashback. Jade Fox is fricking awesome.

Just got Hero in today, another Wuxia flick that I enjoyed. Haven't seen it in about 6 years either, so I'm excited. I remember it being a tad self indulgent, but it was good nonetheless. Can't wait to watch tonight.

That film gets better and better every time I watch it, especially now that I don't need to follow the subtitles as much--I can focus on the acting which is just stunning. Michelle Yeoh was robbed of an Oscar nom--she's Vietnamese acting in Madarin--wow!

I liked it. I thought it drug a little in the middle and I was very disappointed that we never saw a good fight scene from Chow.

But it was still very good. Haven't seen Hero yet.

it did. flashback was too long and it was too long a break from the main story.

See, I liked how they did it. The few times they show him fight, he is completely dominant. Jade Fox takes on multiple people in the courtyard at night and makes them look bitchmade, then Li Mu Bai fights her by himself and we find out that SHE is bitchmade, and he is the bitchmaker. I like that we never get a full fight scene because it makes him look like more of the mythical legendary warrior. I definitely see what you're saying though, I was of the same view the first time I watched it

Great movie. Its a movie I watch when I want to practice my Chinese and will use merely Chinese subtitles to get anything I missed. Watched it quite a few times and its really helped me out.

Wasn't it thought of as pretty meh by the Chinese? I think I remember reading that they thought it was just another wuxia film

In typical Ang Lee fashion, the movie looks incredible.

The actual movie itself... I wasn't a huge fan, but I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to the history of Asian cinema

I completely agree with most of what you said.
It is a top 10 movie for me and last Christmas I received it plus Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower (this one is self-indulgent).

All excellent movies but CTHD is the best.

Have not seen Curse of Golden Flower, but I agree that CTHD is the best. It just has such a beautiful feel to it without being too cinematic like Hero
