But there is no way to tell that the guy wouldn't have continued beating him more severely or even killed him. Obviously the guy felt his life was on the line and took the right steps to defend it.

Unfortunately we are unable to predict the future when it comes to defensive encounters. That's why hindsight is 20/20 and we're allowed to be armchair quarterbacks and say what would have been the 100% right thing to do. But I think this guy did the right thing to defend himself and his wife. It just seems like the family of the ex husband wants some money for him being an idiot and assaulting Jason.

easy to say that when your arse isn't on the line.

Not saying the guy in OP did anything wrong but there is a fine line in the eyes of the law on when a fist fight can turn into a life or death situation where guns can become involved.

It is truly scary how your life can change in the blink of an eye and then it's in the hands of 12 strangers and hired lawyers ( scum ). They get months to analyze your actions when you had split seconds to make your decision.
