I think the first time I heard them was on Craig Kilborn's show. Still my favorite KoL song:

I really mean it when I say they are a different band now. I don't even think they are capable of making a song like this anymore. This isn't alt-country, this is cowpunk filtered through AC/DC.

Youth and Young Manhood is such a good album.

there was so much hype around the strokes, kings of leon, and even interpol at the time. they each came out with a bang, got great press, built pretty big followings, released follow-ups that built nicely on their debuts, and then shouldve stopped.
