As for The Avengers 2, we’ve already heard reports that death would be a significant theme, as indicated by the mid-credits scene featuring Thanos and his apparent glee at “courting death.” Couple that with Whedon’s admission that the sequel will feature a more personal threat to the Avengers, and it’s looking more and more likely like The Avengers 2 will be The Empire Strikes Back of the series, as far as a more downbeat, darker ending is concerned.

Captain America dies in the comics, maybe he does here as well?

After a Iron Man trilogy I would say this film would be a perfect time to have Iron Man kick the bucket. It would certainly be a power move and I believe Downey is ready to move on from the character from what I understand.

They would have to jump through a shitload of hoops to show the "Sanford Incident"

They're not going to kill any of the big 3 that have standalone films. I would say the canidates are Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Black Widow, maybe the Hulk.

I don't think any of these characters dying would be an "awful" thing.

Yeah I read an article where he specifically says he's ready to move on, plus his contract is up after IM3.

I agree but $$$$$ overrides everything else, so its obvious they're not killing one of the stars of their individual films.

RDJ's contract being extended or not doesn't matter. Marvel's not going to miss out on Iron Man 4 money for the sake of a story.

Hulk won't die b/c he can't die.

It's possible that they could kill off Cap. I think we have a better view of this depending on what happens with the Winter Solider and whether he makes an appearance in Avengers 2.

There's no killing Cap without the Winter Soldier taking his place. You don't have the Avengers without SOMEBODY being Captain America.

And then you have to ask the question... as the movies go... why would you? Would the guy playing the Winter Solider be able to hold the character of Captain America up? And in the comics, Steve Rogers returns. Why would you kill him off only to return him, presumably for part 3?

I just see Chris Evans as Captain America being an asset. If I were running the studio, I wouldn't be to eager to kill his character off.

I've always held to the thought that Steve Rogers and Tony Stark (among others, but these are the only ones signifigant to this film) will never be killed off permanently.

But I think everybody else is fair game.

Yeah, because Whedon never kills off major, beloved characters.

I never said that he didn't. "They're" would be referring to Marvel Studio's.

Yeah, because Marvel never kills of major, beloved characters.

Kill em, then figure it out how to bring them back in the next movie. That's how comic books work. Once Avengers is done, they will likely reboot the whole thing and start over.

They haven't.

Yes that's how comic books work. A lot of the tropes of the comic book stories can translate to film quite well. Obviously there's a lot that can't. Killing off a main character and therefore losing hundreds of millions from their solo film that would've came out before the next Avengers is not realistic.

I'm not sure why you're acting as if you didn't understand exactly what I was saying from post 1 but hopefully this explanation is enough for you.

I feel it is much more likely that they kill off Iron Man. There are a couple reasons.

1. RDJ's contract is up and I could see him wanting to move beyond this franchise. He has been playing Stark for over 5 years in 4 movies.

2. If the writers decide to add Ant-man to the bunch, Hank Pym's technical/scientific expertise replaces that of Iron Man. The gap in the team will be filled.

3. They won't kill of Capt. America considering that his franchise is relatively new and they haven't introduced a character that could replace him as the leader yet. Winter Soldier is a possibility, but I think it is doubtful.

4. The Hulk won't be killed. He is signed on for multiple other movies.

5. Hawkeye is a possibility, but he doesn't have the emotional impact other characters would bring. They won't kill off Black Widow considering that she is the only female member of the group. You know, diversity and all that jazz.

IMO, if they kill someone, it'll be Iron Man.

I do understand. But they will reboot. Just like the did with the X-Men. You NEED to kill major characters because, well, actors grow out of the role and don't want to do it anymore.

Killing a character in this film will literally have no impact on the possibility of a future stand alone film with that character. The movie going audience is already conditioned to expect reboots.

Marvel Studios HAS killed major characters (Cyclops and Jean Grey in the X-Men films) and will again. There's an easy work around.

So, we have a writer/director who has a history of killing major characters, we have a studio that has shown it will do the same (particularly when contracts are concerned with the actors), and a story adapted from a medium in which major characters are routinely killed. Yeah, I think the idea they won't kill a major character is wrong.

I understand your argument. I'm saying it's wrong.
