Looks like they just take either the most relevant replies that tie the story together or the most liked...if you look at the Ye-Ye fark thread, the top reply is the Courtney Love fark

Would be cool if they also had a "Jump to post in topic" on the Top Reply post so you wouldn't have to wade through the thread to get to that post/responses to that post.
ETA: Ah, nevermind...I just figured out if you bookmark the top reply post, it will jump you to the post within the thread.
