I first heard of this movie when Chicken started a thread about it on the OT. Watching the previews, I'm horrified and fascinated.

Someone fill me in. It looks like Liberace was so obsessed with his lover that he had him surgically altered to look like him (looks like it in the long trailer), and subjected him to incredibly disturbing working and relationship conditions.

Any cliffs on the story?

Well, this thread is gay.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Watching Michael Douglass and Matt Damon make out has to be one of the levels of hell.

Think I'll pass. Seeing MD and MD in bed together could lead to hysterical blindness.

I was born a heterosexual so it doesn't tempt me. Prayers sent.

Oh I get it. I don't want to see a 70 year old man making out with another dude so somehow I am not a hetero.

My grandmother was a huge Liberace fan, FWIW. She adamantly didn't believe any of the gay stories.

Ha. Just like my gran. My other gran took painting lessons from someone just about as flamboyant as Liber and she didn't have a clue.

Your poor, fragile little mind. It must be terrifying to see something so absolutely implausible. :prayers sent:

His best friends called him "Ace"

He was very close to Joan Rivers, inspiring the TV series Joanie Loves Ace

In a January 2013 interview with the New York Post, director Steven Soderbergh said that this movie was originally planned for a theatrical release but was ultimately produced by and aired on HBO instead because the story was "too gay" for Hollywood movie studios: "Nobody would make it, We went to everybody in town. They all said it was too gay. And this is after 'Brokeback Mountain,' by the way, which is not as funny as this movie. I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us."

Michael Douglas was older at the time of filming than Liberace was when he died. Although played by 42-year-old Matt Damon, Scott Thorson was only a teenager when he met Liberace, and still only in his twenties when Liberace died.

Wait, why did you qualify it like that?

bullshite.

Seriously, it looks like a movie about a really disturbing gay relationship, and Hollywood pussied away from it for that reason. No one wanted to cast gay relationships in a bad light in this political climate.

Either way, I'll check it out. The trailer makes it look like Liberace really warped and tortured that guy.

It's probably a big risk for Hollywood to make a movie when you know the only people who will see the movie live in a state with a coast.
