Prepare to cream yourself King Ranch...

Serial Number 1239X (only 5 digits...and starting with a "1")

Grandfather had it chromed in Paris when the Germans started using chlorine gas as a weapon. The chlorine gas was so strong that it quickly corroded their weapons.

...and here's his discharge form.

There's also a wartime pic of my grandfather and a couple of his buddies in France. I need to get a copy of it from relatives before they die.

Although your grandpa is older than mine, those old bastards were a different breed. Real men!

If he showed up at my house and told me he intended to nail my gf, I would politely ask if he wanted me to warm her up for him.

This is awesome.

Question - what service/branch got 1911's as sidearms? My grandfather said he never got a gun and only held/fired a garand a number of times. He was Air Force.

All services used the 1911. However, sidearms were usually for Officers and NCOs (non-commissioned officers). However, they're also for anyone whose specific duty requires a sidearm, regardless of rank.

For the most part, Air Force is primarily a support service. There really isn't much need for the vast majority of Air Force personnel to be weapons proficient. Most Air Force personnel are focused upon doing something to support keeping a bird in the sky.
