Or was he average and is just celebrated for being the first black man in MLB? (amazing thing)

Also, I heard he was not technically the first black guy in the majors. Heard there were others before him that were Latin American but were allowed to play because they weren't African American and they spoke Spanish.

Just curious since today is the anniversary of him taking the field for Brooklyn and that movie is coming out.

He was really good, but had a short career. Maybe not an elite player (Top 10 in the league), but he was very good.

He's actually underrated. Jackie Robinson gets reduced to a Symbol, when he really was one of the greatest players ever, based purely on play on the field.

And MLB was integrated when it first started, and didn't become segregated until Cap Anson threw his weight around to exclude black people around the turn of the century. Rule of thumb, any player described as an Indian (not the team, but racially), was probably a light-skinned black guy breaking the ban.

No its not. I am just curious because I like history and want to know more about the TRUE story before I see that movie. Get the sand out of your vagina.

yes, he was really good.

He didn't get to the majors til he was 28. He won a batting title, led the league in SBs twice, and won an MVP as well as leading his team (that had 1 pennant in the previous 25 years) to 6 pennants in his 10 years including the franchises first ever WS title.

Was he the greatest that ever played? No, but he was a career .300 hitter, a gold glove caliber fielder, and did it all with death threats hanging over him every day.

He was a solid player for his time. Excellent baserunner and hit for average. Also remember he was 28 years old before he played hid first game.

That being said, I dont even think he was the most talented black ballplayer at the time. He was chosen because he carried himself very well. Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson were probably better players. Shouldn't take away from anything Jackie did, though. Just the way things were.

Great athlete - first 4 sports letterman at UCLA...football, baseball, basketball and track.

UCLA -
Won the NCAA long jump - track
Led the league in scoring - basketball
All-American - football

A .097 batting average - baseball

So, he obviously got better but people have long said it was his worst sport.

Both of those guys were deep into their 30s, though.

I have heard that Jackie wasn't the best black baseball player at the time, but I'd like to know who was better than him at 28 or under. Anybody?
