I tried this place last Friday for lunch, thought the decor was cool, but I didn't pay too much attention to it. The service from the bar manager and bar tender were great...very friendly, and they tried hard to make sure I had a good experience. I got the white queso, it didn't taste/look like Velveeta, thought it was good, but it's queso, it's not very hard to do. Got some type of margarita with cucumber in it, enjoyed it. I also got the carnitas poboy with the molé sauce and a side of refried beans and Mexican rice. Both were a bust, rice and beans had zero seasoning. Sandwich was on Ledenheimer bread (at least they told me it was), but the bread was just blah, not toasted or warmed or anything, tasted like it was a day away from being stale. The pork was average, but had way too little of it on the sandwich. I scraped both portions onto one side of the sandwich, so it didn't just taste like I was eating bread. For my taste, the molé was way too sweet. That was a bummer because you can't usually find a molé sauce around this one horse town. The sandwich was dressed with guacamole, which I don't remember anything about on the menu. I'm not a guacamole fan really, so that was annoying. Oh, I liked their salsa for the tortilla chips.

Overall...really good service, cool enough atmosphere, good drinks, very very average, bland Mexican food.

The queso I referred to was not white, so that's very good to know they changed it up.

Same. The salsa and guac were my favorite parts (I am a guac fan though)

I also got that poboy.. or one very similar.. and that's where I got the bad impression for sure. Mexican food on poboy bread is already odd, but it wasn't done very well either. I had that same hard, flaky bread you're referring to.

My sandwich had a decent amount of meat, but it completely fell apart by first bite. The pieces of meat on the sandwich were not cut up, so taking a bite out of tough meat just makes the entire piece come out of the sandwich.

I got a call to go out to Lava Cantina last night because my friend was there to see a band. I hear the drinks are good, so if I'm ever in Perkins Rowe (which is never, but maybe someday), I'd be down to sit at their patio bar sans food and enjoy the day.
