Just ran the numbers and looks like I'm getting a refund for both federal and state.

However, I just realized that I did a small amount of contract work for someone and they didn't send me a 1099 form. So, I need to figure out how much income to add from that work and I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the information tomorrow.

From what I'm reading online, it sounds like there shouldn't be any problem with filing late since I'm owed a refund. Is true for both federal and state filing?

If they didn't send you a 1099 don't claim it

How small? Under $400 I believe and you don't have to worry about it.

If you don't owe anything, just file for Form 4868 to get an extension. On the Form, just show that nothing is due. When you get the correct info, file. If it turns out that you do owe something, you will be responsible for a failure to pay penalty. But, as long as you file by October 15, you will not be hit with the late filing penalty.

Did you deposit the money? Why couldn't you look up your bank statements to see what you deposited?

Also, be sure to deduct any expenses you incurred from performing this work.

They don't have to send a 1099 if the work was below $600.

I had one 1099 for my taxes and almost positive it said $400

That 1099 cost me a $1200 tax return

I got a $14 tax return instead

somebodies math is wrong

ETA: point of clarification, the return is what you file, the refund is money you get back

If you live Louisiana, state taxes aren't due until next month.

I do not understand how $400 worth of income when even taxed at 39% would only have a tax due of $156 could have cost you almost $1200

I never said it was $400 worth of income

I was referring to someone else's question of if it was under $400 they did not need a 1099 for it

that was poorly worded after I re-read it. Here is how I should have stated it.

I had one 1099 for my taxes and almost positive it said $400

My one 1099 that I had to file cost me a $1200 tax return

This says I don't have to file an extension if I don't owe money.
