I have a mix if st aug and centipede (different areas). My yard is looking pretty meh right now. It's good grass, 2-4-d'd all the clovers. Just want it to be thick and lush.

What should I fertilize with? When? Supposed to rain tomorrow so I could put something down in the morning.

If it's green you want, put Ammonium nitrate. 34-0-0. Nitrogen makes leaf growth.

I like to put a balanced one first like 13-13-13. Put plenty, there's way less nitrogen in it than above. We've put as much as 200 plus pounds per acre and not burned it. Grass loves fertilizer.

I had bought 80# of 13-13-13 because a friend told me but then I can't find anyone on the Internet saying its good. What #/sf should I go?

tripple 13 is great....go ahead and put it out, as the grass is greening up right now...st aug likes hot and humid weather with a good bit of water, so you want it to be fed well when that gets here...

you say it will rain shortly...the only caveat is that you don't want to put out your fertilizer and then get a monsoon that will wash it all away...

There's nothing wrong with it. It may be THE most popular fertilizer. In fact I call it the idiot fertilizer cause for someone not knowing anything in relation to soil needs (per soil sample) it's a pretty good CYA.

Only difference in 13-13-13 and, say 10-10-10 is one has more fillers while the other has more of the nitrogen, phosphorus and potash.

A bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer contains 10 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphate and 10 percent potash.

And that will serve anyone well. In fact I've decided to pretty much go that route too. I already hit a round of trip 13 and mine is pretty green. I still have a few buttercups and some poe anna (sp?).

1. Cut grass very low (practically scalp) and rake out all debris. This may be substantial if you have St. Augustine.

2. Apply 13-13-13 at the rate written on the bag. Most feed and seed shops have spreaders to loan out with purchase and can even set them for you.

3. Raise mower with future cuttings until you are cutting at max height by heat of late May early June. (The shade provided by the grass maintains moisture in the soil)

4. Repeat the 13-13-13 in 30-45 days after 1st application. This application will not only continue to green the grass, but will provide the lush thickness and carpet like feel. This also will allow most weeds to be choked out.

5. Water 3-4 times a week. Best to water early in the morning just before or at daylight. This way the grass dries quickly. Watering at night is better than no water, but letting the grass stay wet overnight can cause fungus.

6. Prepare to mow the thickest grass you ever have, every 5-8 days.
