At 33, Theriot has not walked away from baseball. He still wants to play, but on his terms.

He is that rare player who is capable of continuing his career for several more years but ready to hang it up if he is not offered a job with significant playing time. He does not want to be anybody's backup and is ready to become a full-time dad, and maybe a player agent, if the right situation does not arise.

"I like to play. I'm a busybody," Theriot told The Chronicle in his first interview with a Bay Area reporter since the World Series. "I like to go out there and do it. I'm counterproductive when I'm just watching. I like to contribute in some way, shape or form other than in the clubhouse and feel needed on the field.

"I've had some stuff come up, no doubt. It's not really exactly what I'm looking for playing-time-wise. That's where we're at right now. We'll see what happens."
