I wouldn't mind seeing them "lose" in the second film so we can see them overcome the odds in the 3rd.

That wouldn't work with the way Marvel handles their films. Each Avengers has to wrap up by the end of the movie so they can break back up into another phase of individual character pictures.

And the Dark Knight trilogy is considered the best adaptation of comic material yet.

Who thinks this?

I would think "best adaptation of comic material" would be something that fundamentally celebrates its roots, not hides it.

Would be great ending to a movie.

Lose the battle but win the war. I just want to see something like this happen.

Oh and I agree with onslaught.

While I love The Dark Knight trilogy, you are spot on. The Avengers is a film that celebrates comics and feels like the comics come to screen. TDK trilogy isn't even really a comic book movie, more of a crime trilogy, but it still nails everything.

Ultron would be nice but would need setup. Maybe for phase 3.

Ant Man is the first movie of phase 3. This may have legs.

Exactly. And I don't see them ending in a defeat, that just wouldn't fit the tone.

I didn't realize that on first viewing, but yes I remember saying that the second time. I think tdkr confirms that.

They've already said they are laying out the Thanos story in Guardians, right before Avengers 2 comes out, and then proceeding with him going after Earth in the movie.

Reports have confirmed that Thanos is going to appear in those 2 films. His role in them is yet to be determined.

We also know from the words of Thanos creator Jim Starlin, that the Mad Titan would be involved with Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2, although not necessarily serving as the primary antagonist in each.

My money would him staying in the shadows till Avengers 3

The Controller is strongly rumored for GotG and Drax the Destroyer has already been cast. I'm thinking Drax will show up in Avengers 2 to take out Thanos.

I would hope they don't stick with him through two films?

I would hope they do because Thanos is literally the best villain in the entire Marvel Universe. He worships death, people. This is good times.

We need an Infinity Gauntlet movie with the Avengers, Fan 4, Xmen, etc...

Seriously. it would be the greatest comic movie of all time in the right hands.

ETA: Outside of Marvel vs DC. But let's face it, DC can't even get a Justice league movie off the ground, so this wouldn't happen.

But what could they do? I'm not saying I don't want it, I just don't see it possible unless they would have shot 2 and 3 as a single arc.

If they are doing this in phases...that puts A3 at what? 2018? You are going to wait that long to clear up the Thanos storyline?

Idealistically? Of course, he's awesome, and Death is a huge part of that.

Logistically? I just don't see it working well. By Phases 3 we have to have some new members and threats.

That's all I mean.

But the thing is, Lucas gets attacked for doing this in the SW franchise.

When I have more time, I will write up a dissertation for the M/TV about this same thing. But to do this, the third film will be attacked bc of the fact that the 2nd is "darker" for the heroes losing and the third is "too light".

Right. There are two ways to have Thanos in the second and third film:

1. Avengers lose a big battle

2. Thanos is in the shadows

Although 1 fits the character of Thanos well, I don't see the studio hedging bets on a big battle and subsequent loss by heroes.

And if Thanos was in the shadows even more than the last film, that would just be lame.

I don't know if any of the main actors are even signed on to Avengers 3 yet. I can see them doing something to write off Tony Stark for example in Avengers 2 if RDJ wants to stop playing the character. It would be a way to have the group suffer a big loss, but still win the war. I'm not saying they would kill him because they would obviously reboot the character in 5 years or so with a new actor.

Thought the robots in I, Robot were quality and would green light a production of a bad arse Ultron, with Hank Pym as his creator in Avengers 2. This would make the origins Ant Man and the Wasp an easy write in the story line.
